The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a fully funded scholarship for international students studying at either the masters or doctoral level. An annual stipend of £18,744, health insurance, academic development funding of £2,000, and a family allowance of up to £15,612 are provided by this scholarship.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship Program was founded in 2000 as a result of a $210 million donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge, the single-largest gift to the British institution.

Gates Cambridge will offer 80 full-fee scholarships to outstanding candidates from outside the United Kingdom who wish to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge in any field. Roughly two-thirds of these awards will be given to PhD students, while a total of 55 awards will be given in the International round and 25 will be offered in the US round.

Scholarship Coverage

Gates Cambridge scholarship awards the following benefits to its recipient:

  • Composition Fees for Undergraduates
  • For PhD scholars, the award lasts up to four years, and is worth up to £18,744 for twelve months at the 2023-24 rate.
  • For the entire duration of the course, one single economy ticket gets for the beginning and the end.
  • The cost of inbound visas and the Immigration Health Surcharge

Grants for academic development – depending on the length of your course, up to £2,000 to attend conferences and courses.

Allowance for family – one child can receive £10,944 and up to two children can receive £15,612 (2023-24 rate). Your partner will not receive funding.

PhD fieldwork – you may qualify for additional maintenance support while on fieldwork as part of your PhD (the Trust will not cover additional fieldwork costs; these are to be paid by the University Composition Fee).

Funding for maternity/paternity – you may apply for a temporary interruption of your studies for up to 6 months and still receive your maintenance allowance

Funding for hardships – to assist scholars with unforeseen difficulties

Eligibility Criteria for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship

If a student is interested in obtaining the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, they must fulfill all of the following requirements:

Eligible Countries: All world countries.

  • An excellent academic record.
  • You’ll have a strong argument in favour of a Cambridge postgraduate degree.
  • Commitment to improving others’ lives.
  • You have a potential for leadership.
  • Applicants must be international to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree.

Courses that are NOT Qualify for Gates Cambridge Scholarships:

⊗  Doctorate in Business  (MBA, M.D., etc.)

⊗  Finance Master’s Degree (MFin)

⊗  Diploma in Education (PGCE)

⊗  Clinical Studies of MBBChir

⊗  MD Doctor of Medicine (6 years, part-time degree)

⊗  Medical Graduate Course (A101)

⊗  Studies on a part-time basis

⊗  Courses not leading to a degree

How to Apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship?

Applicants for Gates Cambridge Scholarships should follow the following instructions:

(1) The Gates Cambridge section of the funding application involves applying for admission to a course and a College place.

(2) Set up an account on the official website.

(3) Enter your personal information

(4) Submit the following documents:

  • Gates Cambridge Program Statement: Please submit a 500-word essay about how you meet Gates Cambridge’s four main criteria and why you applying for the gates Cambridge scholarship.
  • Resume or curriculum vitae (CV)
  • A proposal for a research project (PhD applicants only)
  • Reference to gates: There is a two-reference-per-applicant rule for the Gates Cambridge program.
  • Provide a reference about their suitability for the scholarship.
