Courses Offered
The following faculties offer Masters programs:
⇒ Topics covered in these majors are Humanities, Archaeology, Medicine, Law, Governance, and Global Affairs, Science, Social and Behavioral Sciences, International Institute for Asian Studies, and African Studies Centre.
Program Period
⇒ A 1-year program can be completed in 12 months, while a 2-year program can be completed in 24 months.
Eligibility Criteria for Leiden University Excellence Scholarship
All Leiden University Excellence Scholarship applicants must meet the following requirements:
Required Language: English
Eligible Countries: Non-EEA/Non-EFTA international students
1) Study program requirements
⇒ Candidates applying for the Master’s programs at Leiden University with the exception of LLM and MSc at Leiden Law School are encouraged to apply.
2) Academic requirements
⇒ Achieving good grades in the previous program (or programs) will strengthen the student’s chances of getting into a Master’s program. Students should have achieved high grades in the previous study program(s), which must be relevant to the one for which they are applying. As an indication, the student is among the top 10% of graduates from the previous program. Keep in mind that ranking is not needed as proof, and this information only gives an indication of competitiveness.
3) Application conditions
⇒ Applicants must have a non-EEA/non-EFTA passport and are not eligible to receive loans or grant support from the Dutch government (Studiefinanciering). However, the following programs do not have nationality restrictions:
⇒ Programs offering advanced LLM studies
⇒ Master (MSc) in International Relations and Diplomacy
Obligations
⇒ A LExS student must agree to the Terms and Conditions attached to the scholarship before it is awarded, and confirm their agreement in writing.
Exclusions
⇒ Applicants with a Leiden University Master’s degree are not eligible for scholarships, with the exception of those applying to an advanced Master program for which prior study is necessary (i.e. the LLM program).
⇒ Scholarship recipients cannot come to Leiden to follow an LLM or MSc program, as those programs do not qualify for LExS scholarships.
⇒ Advanced LLM programs that start in September only award scholarships to applicants for that year. You cannot apply for an Advanced LLM starting 1 Feb and still get a scholarship.
⇒ To apply for the Master’s program at the Faculty of Science, you have to be starting in September and you are not awarded a scholarship for starting on a date before September.
⇒ The LExS cannot be combined with another Leiden University scholarship.
⇒ It is not possible to have the LExS scholarships combined with another external scholarship. You must tell us if you have already been offered another full scholarship from another source. The LExS may, under special circumstances, be combined with partial funding from an outside sponsor. Check with the Scholarships Team for more information.
How to Apply for Leiden University Excellence Scholarship?
The following instructions will guide you through the application process for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship:
⇒ Apply online and pay the application fee if you want to enroll in a Master’s program at Leiden University.
⇒ Indicate in your online application’s scholarship section that you are applying for the LEks scholarship.
⇒ Please submit your Lexis motivation letter as instructed in the instructions for your application. It should be a PDF of a maximum of 500 words in length. Give an answer to the question, Why do you want this award?
⇒ You must submit your online application before the LExS application deadline, which contains your LExS application.
⇒ Applicants who wish to apply for more than one study program should clearly indicate this in each application and upload a LExS motivation letter for each program.
