Eligibility Criteria for Rhodes Scholarship Canada

One has to meet these qualifications to apply for a Rhodes Scholarship Canada:

Required Language: English

Citizenship and Permanent Residency: For each Rhodes constituency, applicants are required to fulfill citizenship and residency requirements. See the list of eligible countries.

Education: The applicant must have completed an honors bachelor’s degree by October and must have sufficient academic standing to ensure admission to the University of Oxford since it has very competitive entry requirements. The minimum GPA requirements in Canada are 3.75/4.0 or equivalent.

Age: The age limit varies between constituencies, ranging from 18 to 28 by October 1st of the year following selection. Most constituencies have an age limit of 24 or 25. 

Be sure to check the specific requirements of your residency before you apply. In order to maintain funding, successful applicants must arrive in Oxford in the fall semester following the scholarship process. The scholarship cannot be deferred.

Required Documents:

  Constituents will need a different form of each of the following 

  Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae/resume or a list of their principal activities.

  Academic records/transcripts (complete or in progress) for undergraduate and postgraduate studies

  An essay or personal statement (including a clear explanation of why the applicant wishes to study at Oxford)

  Check here for requirements regarding English Language proficiency (where English is not the first language).

  Copies of birth certificate or passport

  One picture

  Reference letters from four people who can verify the character and intellect of the applicant, including academic, personal, extracurricular, and leadership accomplishments (and who should not be family members). 

Step-by-Step Guide to Applying:

(1) Apply online at http://www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk/scholarships/apply.

(2) You must apply for this program online, and submit all required documents by the deadline.

(3) The following are sources of information that you can reference to learn more about what Rhodes Scholarship hopefuls need to know and do: general information, Conditions of Tenure, Graduate admissions, and information on the University of Oxford.

(4) We will invite shortlisted candidates to attend a social engagement and a final interview; please make sure you are able to attend them both, in person. It will not be possible to select candidates without an interview. The Rhodes Trust will cover travel expenses, excluding hotel expenses for a round-trip rail ticket. It is not possible to fund international travel for those attending from abroad.

(5) All applicants will be emailed the outcome of their application.

Selection Procedure:

  Financial means are not taken into account in the selection process for the Rhodes Scholarship.

  Unlike a lot of other scholarships, the selection criteria for Rhodes Scholarship do not take into consideration your marital status, ethnicity, gender, or anything else irrelevant. 

  Providing that kind of information in the Outreach section of the application form is optional but useful because it helps us make sure that the selection process is fair and select only candidates who seem interesting. Selection members will only see anonymized summaries of the applications that they didn’t pursue; they cannot figure out the identities of candidates they are not pursuing.

  This is to notify you that the Rhodes Scholarships application cannot be deferred, meaning that your submission date is set as October of the current year.

  In order to win the Rhodes Scholarships, students have to be accepted by Oxford.

  In the absence of a sufficiently qualified candidate, no selection will be made.

  Final decisions are made by the Selection Committee.

Procedure after Selection:

  If selected, you will need to apply to the University of Oxford very soon after and all the details will be provided in time. 

  Successful candidates may access their application data as provided by Rhodes House, Oxford, and may use it as an admissions requirement when applying to Oxford.

  Candidates who are successful will be encouraged to disclose in confidence any medical conditions or special needs that may require academic or personal support at Oxford. The information requested is entirely voluntary and is only requested to help Rhodes House provide suitable support to students and make the transition as smooth as possible.
